UK PPI Input (Aug MM) 0.3% vs. Exp. 0.4% (Prev. -0.8%)

Historically this series feeds through to CPI with a lag of several months and only partially, so it has tended to matter for sterling and the front of the gilt curve mainly when it corroborates or challenges the Bank of England's prevailing narrative on imported and energy-driven costs. The distinction worth drawing is between the input and output prints: output prices track closer to consumer inflation and carry more weight with the MPC, while input prices are more sensitive to commodity and FX swings and noisier month to month. A single below-consensus input reading has rarely shifted the policy path on its own; what has moved rate pricing is when such prints cluster alongside soft wage and services data. The follow-ons are the output PPI detail, the revisions to the prior negative month, and how the print is read into the next CPI release and the MPC's meeting cadence.
