UK PPI Output (Sep MM) 0.8% vs. Exp. 0.7% (Prev. 0.7%)

What it means

A modest upside surprise on factory gate prices, with the prior month unrevised, which limits the signal. UK PPI output has historically carried second-tier status in the sterling and gilt reaction function: the MPC's framing runs through CPI and, above all, services inflation and pay, so producer prices tend to move the front end only when they corroborate or contradict the pipeline story rather than on their own. The transmission channel to watch is input costs feeding through to output prices with a lag, and then into the goods component of CPI; a firm output print alongside rising input prices has, in past episodes of pipeline pressure, preceded stickier headline inflation and a more cautious BoE tone, while an isolated output beat without input corroboration has tended to fade within the session. The distinction worth drawing is between energy and commodity-driven moves, which the committee has historically looked through, and broad-based core producer pressure, which it has not. The follow-ons are the input price and core PPI detail within the same release, and whether the next CPI print shows goods disinflation stalling. As a single marginal beat, the print is directional context rather than a repricing event.
