RPI is a legacy measure, withdrawn from official designation and no longer the target variable, but it retains a live transmission channel: index-linked gilt coupons and principal accretions are still referenced to it, so a miss versus consensus feeds directly into linker cashflow expectations and the inflation carry embedded in the long end of the real curve. A one-tenth miss on the monthly print is within the noise that has historically moved linkers only marginally; repricing tends to require a surprise large enough to shift the accretion profile over coming quarters. The release also matters for the wedge between RPI and CPI, since that spread drives the step change already legislated for when legacy RPI-linked instruments transition onto a CPIH-aligned basis, a distinction that separates long-dated linkers from shorter maturities in how they digest each print. Secondary uses, indexation of certain regulated prices and wage negotiations, keep the series watched beyond the gilt desk. The follow-ons are the CPI and CPIH prints, which carry the policy weight, and any revision pattern in the housing components that typically accounts for the divergence. As a modest miss on a legacy series, the signal is incremental rather than directional.
