Context

RPI remains the reference rate for index-linked gilts even though it has lost its status as an official national statistic and the headline policy focus sits with CPI, so the transmission here runs through the linker market and through RPI-linked contracts such as regulated rail fares and some utility pricing, not through Bank Rate expectations directly. A tenth below consensus after an acceleration from the prior month is the kind of marginal miss that has historically moved breakevens only briefly, with the gilt market tending to reprice on the accompanying CPI print and the DMO issuance calendar rather than on RPI alone. The split worth drawing is between the inflation-linked curve, where RPI fixings feed cash flows mechanically, and the nominal policy channel, where this release carries little weight given the Bank's stated preference for CPI. The usual follow-ons are the CPI release, any ONS commentary on the RPI-CPI wedge, which is dominated by the housing components in RPI, and the shape of the next linker auction. As a secondary print, the signal is real for the linker desk but limited for the broader rates complex.
