What it means
A print landing exactly on consensus is a non-event for repricing in itself; the information content sits in the composition and the revisions, not the headline. UK retail sales are a volatile, weather- and calendar-distorted series, and desks have historically discounted single-month moves in favour of the three-month trend, which is what the Bank of England's consumption read tends to key off. The distinction that matters for the rates channel is volumes versus values: retail sales here are volume terms, so a soft print alongside still-firm services inflation feeds the domestic-demand leg of the MPC debate rather than the inflation leg directly. The swing from a strong prior month to a negative one follows a familiar payback pattern in this series and on its own has rarely shifted the Sonia strip without corroboration from the labour report or CPI. The follow-ons are the quarterly GDP estimate and the next round of MPC commentary, where consumption resilience or otherwise feeds the timing argument on the easing path. In line means the prior positioning does the talking; the release confirms rather than informs.
