Context

A final PMI is a revision to a flash print already in the market, so the information content sits almost entirely in the delta between flash and final rather than the level itself; beats of this size on revisions have historically been absorbed quietly, with gilt yields and sterling moving on the flash and merely confirming on the final. The more durable signal in UK services PMIs has been the sub-indices rather than the headline: the prices charged and input cost components, which have tended to feed the services inflation read that carries the most weight in MPC deliberations, and the employment and new business lines, which separate a broad-based expansion from one carried by a thin order book. The distinction that matters for the rate path is between activity resilience, which argues for caution on easing, and cooling price components, which argue the opposite; final releases that move one without the other have tended to fade by the close. The next tell is whether the composite revision and the following official labour and inflation prints corroborate the direction, since survey-versus-hard-data gaps have been a recurring feature of the UK cycle.
