US Building Permits Prel (Aug MM) -2.7% (Prev. 4.3%)
A swing of that size in permits is large by the series' own standards, but permits is a low-tier print and historically moves rates only when it confirms or breaks a housing trend already visible in starts, homebuilder sentiment and mortgage applications.

The level matters more than the month: permits lead starts, so a single soft preliminary reading has tended to be revised or reversed, while a run of declines has preceded genuine construction downturns and the drag on residential investment that feeds into GDP. The split worth drawing is single-family against multifamily, since multifamily permits are volatile and have driven most of the big monthly swings in past episodes, whereas the single-family component is the cleaner read on rate-sensitive demand. Preliminary prints are subject to revision, and the follow-ons are the starts and completions data from the same release cycle plus the next round of homebuilder surveys. Unless it marks a trend break, the transmission channel into Treasuries via the growth impulse is limited; the dollar and equity reaction to housing data of this tier has typically been brief.
