The Leading Economic Index is a second-tier composite of already-known components (claims, hours, orders, credit, spreads, sentiment), so the miss against expectations moves little by itself; its informational content has historically sat in the trend, with a run of negative month-on-month prints treated as the classic recession tell rather than any single reading. The index has also earned a reputation for false positives, having signalled downturns in past soft patches that never arrived, which is why desks weight the coincident and labour data more heavily. The sub-components worth attention are the ones not yet stale: jobless claims and the rate spread feed, since they carry the freshest information. The follow-on is the next claims print and whether the composite's six-month diffusion continues to deteriorate. As a data point this is colour, not a catalyst.
