Context

A draw of this size versus a near-flat consensus is an unusually large miss for a weekly inventory series, and the established pattern on such prints is a knee-jerk bid in WTI that then gets interrogated once the full report detail circulates: headline crude draws that come with offsetting product builds, a collapse in refinery runs, or a swing in the adjustment factor have historically faded, while draws underwritten by strong implied demand and falling Cushing stocks have tended to hold. The split that matters is between a supply or outage driven draw, which is transient, and a demand driven one, which feeds through to spreads and timespreads rather than just flat price. Weekly EIA data of this kind is noisy and frequently revised in the monthly series, so single prints have rarely shifted the medium-term balance narrative on their own. Follow-ons are the gasoline and distillate lines, the Cushing figure, and whether the print aligns with the prior API reading; confirmation across those is what has separated durable repricing from a half-hour move.
