US EIA Heating Oil Stocks Change (Aug/28) -0.033M (Prev. 0.027M)

A marginal swing from a small build to a small draw in heating oil stocks is within the normal noise band for this series and, on precedent, does not move the complex on its own.

Context

The EIA weekly distillate line has historically mattered as a read on refinery throughput and seasonal demand rather than as a headline number, with the crude and gasoline lines in the same report tending to dominate the WTI and product futures reaction when they diverge from expectations. The distinction worth drawing is between the raw stock change and the implied demand and yield components beneath it: episodes where distillate balances tightened structurally have shown up first in the ULSD crack and the heating oil curve rather than in any single weekly print. Seasonally, the series gains significance as the market approaches the northern hemisphere heating season, when repeated draws have tended to steepen prompt spreads. The relevant follow-ons are the refinery utilisation and product supplied figures in the same release and confirmation in the subsequent API-to-EIA sequencing. As an isolated sub-component close to unchanged, the signal is negligible.
