Context

Weekly EIA inventory prints of this size are routine tape; a modest distillate draw against a prior build is a direction-of-travel signal rather than a level that re-prices the complex on its own. The components that historically move the strip are the implied demand and refinery-utilisation lines underneath the headline stock change, plus what crude and gasoline did in the same report, since an across-the-barrel draw reads differently from a distillate-only one. Heating oil is the smaller of the product complexes, so sustained moves in the HO crack tend to come from the heating season build-up, colder weather forecasts, and low starting distillate inventories rather than any single weekly swing. The pattern in past episodes is that the initial futures reaction to the headline number frequently retraces once the detail is digested, with the Cushing stock change and refinery runs doing more of the lasting work. Worth noting is whether this print extends or reverses a recent run of builds, since streaks in either direction have mattered more to the forward curve and time spreads than the absolute size of any one change.
