Context

Refinery crude runs are the demand-side component of the weekly EIA report and historically trade as a secondary line; the crude and product stock draws and builds carry the price signal, with runs mattering mainly as the denominator that explains them. A swing back to positive runs after a decline of similar size is the usual signature of refiners returning from scheduled maintenance or restoring capacity after outages, a pattern that recurs around the autumn turnaround season when runs trough before the winter heating demand period. The mechanism is direct: higher runs raise crude intake, tightening the crude balance, while lifting product output, which loosens gasoline and distillate balances, so the crude and product legs of the curve can move in opposite directions on the same number. This series is noisy week to week and revisions are common, so single prints rarely hold attention unless they confirm a trend in utilization. The follow-ons of note are the utilization rate and the product inventory lines in the same release, plus the following week's runs to distinguish a genuine maintenance ramp from statistical noise.
