US Energy Secretary Wright says talks with the UK on diesel stock releases are continuing; The US is converting sanctioned tankers to legitimate tankers

Newsquawk Staff ·

  • Dozens to hundreds of dark tankers could be converted.

What it means

Coordinated stock releases between the US and allies are an established tool in periods of refined product tightness, and past episodes have tended to see the barrels announced before the logistics are secured, so the follow-through detail matters as much as the headline. The diesel angle is the sharper one: distillate balances are structurally tighter than crude, so talk of UK cooperation points at the product market rather than the flat price of oil, with the usual transmission through cracks, timespreads and regional arbitrage. The tanker conversion remark is the more novel element. Attempts to bring sanctioned or 'dark fleet' tonnage into the legitimate market have historically run into insurance, flag and class constraints, and only a fraction of nominally available hulls typically clear those hurdles quickly, which is why the range given here spans an order of magnitude. If conversion does proceed at scale it would add effective shipping supply and loosen the freight and insurance premia that sanctions have embedded in delivered costs, a different channel from the stock release itself. What bears on the tape next is whether the UK side confirms, whether barrels are timed or conditional, and any detail on which fleet or sanction regime the conversions target.
