OPEN: US indices opened the first trading session of the week mixed, as the Nasdaq 100 (+0.4%) outperforms, while the Russell 2000 and Dow Jones are in the red. Sectors are predominantly lower, with only Tech and Communication Services in the green, as Real Estate and Energy are the laggards; WTI and Brent see losses, albeit the former seeing greater weakness. Crude benchmarks were pressured amid reports of Yemeni Houthi leader Mohammed al-Bukhaiti calling for a truce, saying “no one benefits from war, according to social media reports. However, Houthi media pushed back on these claims.

Treasuries are lower, while G10 FX peers are weaker vs. the Greenback, while the Brazilian Real soars after Bolsonaro won the first round of the Brazilian election, sending it to a run-off vote vs incumbent Lula. EUR continues to be weighed on by fiscal and political woes, and the Yen saw a bout of weakness as Japan's GPIF didn't discuss allocation at its September meeting.

Ahead, ISM Services is due at the top of the hour with the calendar thin thereafter.

Context

Open recaps of this kind rarely carry a durable signal of their own; the actionable content sits in the calendar and the cross-asset tells. The narrow pattern here, Tech and Communication Services green while the Dow and Russell lag, is the familiar concentration dynamic that has characterised sessions where the index level masks weak breadth, and historically such opens have been more vulnerable to a macro print than to follow-through from the opening tape. That puts the weight on the ISM Services release at the top of the hour: on thin-calendar days a single services survey has tended to set the afternoon tone for both the front end and the dollar, with the employment and prices-paid sub-indices doing as much work as the headline. The crude move on unconfirmed and disputed Houthi truce reports fits the established pattern in this conflict, where de-escalation headlines fade fast unless verified through shipping and insurance channels rather than social media. The deal tape is the more concrete strand: cash bids at wide premia to Friday closes will price on completion and regulatory risk, and the semiconductor angle, a marquee foundry in talks on a Texas project previously linked to a rival, is the sort of competitive-realignment story that has historically re-rated the perceived loser more than the winner. The Brazilian real's move on a first-round election result is the standard EM political repricing ahead of a run-off, a pattern that has tended to partially retrace as the second vote approaches.
