OPEN:

US indices opened mixed, and within pretty tight ranges, as risk events await, in the form of Fed speak, data, earnings, and, of course, geopolitics. Sectors see negative bias, with Energy the clear laggard, and weighed on by oil with losses of around USD 1.50/bbl in benchmarks. The latest US/Iran updates include Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi stating Tehran is discussing proposals with Qatari mediators to present to the US, and that a response is to be relayed to Tehran through Qatari mediators, and Iranian Foreign Minister said they expect a US response today.

The Dollar Index is firmer, to the detriment of G10 FX peers, with the Aussie the underperformer after the RBA hiked rates by 25bps, though Governor Bullock tilted dovish. Precious metals are firmer, attempting to pare some of Monday's extensive losses, with Treasuries lower across the curve. Ahead, US Consumer Confidence and JOLTS are due at the top of the hour, followed by a slew of Fed speakers scheduled and Trump's AI-related lunch.

Context

Session wraps of this kind are less a signal than a map of where positioning is thin: tight opening ranges ahead of a stacked calendar, heavy Fed speak, top-of-hour confidence and JOLTS prints, and live geopolitical wires, is the classic setup in which the first move out of the range tends to be headline-driven rather than flow-driven. The internals carry the more durable information: Energy lagging on a leg lower in crude alongside firmer precious metals and a stronger dollar is a combination that has historically accompanied risk-paring rather than risk-on rotation, and Nasdaq outperformance against that backdrop usually reflects idiosyncratic megacap and deal flow rather than breadth. The AUD reaction to a hike paired with dovish guidance follows the familiar pattern in which the currency trades the forward signal rather than the decision, leaving the sell-the-hike response as the default when the accompanying language caps the expected path. Single-name items are of the ordinary sort: succession talk at a major bank tends to trade as a governance story with limited multiple impact until confirmed, all-stock acquisitions typically pressure the acquirer near term, and long-dated gene therapy updates with waning benefit have tended to fade after the initial pop. The items worth tracking are whether Fed speakers cohere around a common message and whether the Iran channel produces a response within the session, since those are the two wires capable of repricing oil and the front end simultaneously.
