Context
Factory orders ex transportation is the steady core of the durables report, a series that strips out the aircraft and auto swings that typically dominate the headline. On prior occasions a deceleration in this measure has read as a softening in underlying capital-goods demand rather than noise, and it is the core capital goods component that feeds directly into the equipment-spending estimates used for GDP tracking. Absent an estimate in the print, the directional signal here is momentum loss against the prior reading. The usual sequencing matters: this is a lagging release that follows the advance durables report, so the surprise content is limited to revisions and the nondurables fill-in, which is driven largely by energy prices through the refining and chemical chain. The follow-on worth noting is how the shipments and inventories lines within the same release frame the quarterly inventory contribution, since orders alone say little about what was actually produced. As a second-tier print, standalone repricing has historically been modest unless it compounds a run of softer manufacturing surveys.
