Context

The weekly balance sheet release is a low-frequency noise series rather than a decision: modest week-to-week upticks during an active runoff phase typically reflect settlement timing on MBS holdings, amortization lags, or small usage of standing facilities, not a change in runoff policy. Episodes in which this series has carried real signal are those where the increase is persistent and concentrated in lending facilities or reserves, which is what distinguishes a plumbing story from a policy one; a single small rise against a prevailing downtrend in the total has historically been read as mechanical. The transmission channel that matters is the reserves line rather than the headline total, since it is reserve scarcity relative to bank demand that feeds money-market rates and the spread of secured rates over the floor. Worth noting on follow-through is whether usage of the standing repo facility or the discount window shows up in the detail, and whether money-market spreads are corroborating any tightening of liquidity. As a weekly print, the precedent is that it moves rates markets only when it breaks trend for several consecutive releases.
