US GDP Growth Rate Adv (Q3 QQ) 3.4% vs. Exp. 3.2% (Prev. 2.2%)

What it means

A modest beat on the advance GDP print, with acceleration from the prior quarter, is the kind of surprise that has historically moved the front end and the dollar in the direction of a firmer policy path, though the move on advance releases has tended to fade more readily than on labour or inflation data. Advance GDP is the most heavily revised of the major US releases, and episodes of this kind have often been partly unwound by the second estimate once the underlying trade and inventory detail is filled in. The composition question is the one that matters: growth concentrated in consumption and investment has historically been read as genuine momentum, while a beat driven by inventories or net exports has been discounted as a timing artifact that reverses. The detail on core PCE embedded in the release matters as much as the growth headline, since the Fed reads the two together. The follow-ons are the second estimate, the incoming consumption and inflation prints, and whether officials characterise the economy as running above potential.
