US ISM Manufacturing Employment (Jul) 52.8 (Prev. 49.7)

What it means

A move of the employment sub-index back above 50 is the kind of print that has historically mattered less for its own level than for what it implies about the labour components of the broader data calendar, since the ISM employment series has tended to lead, imperfectly, the factory payrolls line in the subsequent jobs report. The distinction worth drawing is between a bounce from a single weak month and a genuine turn: one-month reversals in this sub-index are common and often fade, whereas two or more consecutive readings above the breakeven have more reliably coincided with stabilising manufacturing hiring. A jump of this size from below 50 to above also tends to pull some weight from the prices-paid and new-orders components released alongside it, which in past episodes have determined whether the rates market reads the survey as reflationary or merely as noise. Front-end repricing on a sub-index alone has typically been shallow and short-lived unless the print lands close to a payrolls release or a central bank decision. The follow-on is the services survey later in the week and then the employment report itself, where the manufacturing diffusion signal either confirms or is discarded.
