Context

The prices-paid subindex is the component of the ISM manufacturing survey that markets treat as a pipeline inflation gauge, and a flat print against a marginal consensus miss leaves the prior signal intact rather than breaking it. Readings at these levels have historically been consistent with sustained input-cost pressure in the goods sector, and the subindex has tended to lead goods-price components of the broader inflation data with a lag, which is why it feeds directly into front-end rate expectations around the survey's release. The distinction that matters is between the level and the direction: a stalled but elevated reading argues against disinflation accelerating in the goods channel, whereas a sequential decline from high levels is what has previously marked the turn. The follow-ons are the companion services survey, which carries more weight for the inflation debate given services' dominance in the core basket, and how the employment and new orders components of the same report frame the growth side of the trade-off. As a single subindex printing in line with its prior, this sits at the lower end of the market-moving spectrum for the series.
