US Kansas Fed Manufacturing Index (Aug) 17 (Prev. 17)
A flat print on a regional Fed factory survey is, by precedent, among the least market-moving items on the US calendar; the Kansas City district sits in the second tier of the five regional manufacturing reads, behind the Empire and Philadelphia surveys in terms of the attention it commands, and an unchanged reading gives neither the hawks nor the doves fresh material. The established pattern is that these district surveys matter mainly in aggregate, as cross-checks on the national ISM manufacturing print that follows, with the new orders and employment subindices carrying more signal than the headline composite. An unchanged level at a moderately positive reading is consistent with the stop-start, range-bound conditions that have characterised this series through recent cycles rather than with acceleration or rollover. The follow-ons are the remaining district surveys and the ISM, where the regional reads have historically been a noisy but directional lead. Reaction in Treasuries and the dollar to a print of this kind has typically been negligible, confined to the shortest-dated maturities if at all.
