Context

An in-line manufacturing print with a modest upward revision to the prior month is the kind of release that typically passes with little repricing: manufacturing carries a diminishing share of the US economy, and the Fed's reaction function has long been anchored to the labour market and inflation rather than factory output. The distinction worth drawing is between the manufacturing subcomponent and total industrial production, since the headline IP figure includes utilities and mining and can diverge when weather swings power demand; it is the manufacturing line that maps to the goods cycle and to the factory-gate element of the hard data. Episodes where the factory sector weakens while services hold have historically mattered for the curve only when they feed through to employment, and the transmission channel runs through the ISM surveys and durable goods orders rather than this release itself. The natural follow-ons are the next round of regional Fed surveys and the national ISM, which markets treat as timelier reads on the same sector, plus any revision to capacity utilisation, which is the margin-focused element Fed officials have cited when discussing goods-side slack. A print at consensus with a small revision is, on precedent, a non-event for the front end; it only gains salience in retrospect if subsequent prints establish a trend.
