US Michigan 5 Year Inflation Expectations Preliminary (Sep) 3.4% (Prev. 3.3%)
The long-horizon component of this survey is the one policymakers treat as the anchor, and a one-tick drift higher at the long end tends to draw more attention than an equivalent move in the one-year reading, which is noisier and more petrol-sensitive.

A single preliminary uptick of this size has historically not shifted the policy debate on its own; what has mattered is whether it is confirmed in the final revision and whether it extends into a sequence, since central banks have repeatedly signalled that persistence in long-term expectations, not the level of any one print, is the de-anchoring risk. The mechanism runs through the front end of the nominal curve and through breakevens at the five-year-five-year horizon, which is the market's closest analogue to this measure. The survey has also shown sensitivity to which cohort is moving: tariff- and policy-driven moves concentrated in one political affiliation have previously been discounted as noise, while broad-based rises have been treated as signal. Worth observing next is the final reading later in the month, the accompanying one-year figure for direction of the distribution, and whether officials reference the series in subsequent commentary.
