US Michigan Current Conditions Preliminary (Sep) 50.9 vs. Exp. 51.3 (Prev. 51.9)

A modest miss against both consensus and the prior print fits the soft-drift pattern seen in household surveys when labour market cooling and price fatigue coexist, and in comparable stretches the hard data have tended to diverge from sentiment readings for extended periods. The distinction that matters is between the prelim and the final revision later in the month: revisions of this series have at times been large enough to reverse the initial signal, so the prelim print is treated as provisional. Where this release has historically found traction is through the expectations and inflation-expectations lines feeding the front end and breakevens rather than through the conditions index itself. The follow-ons are the final revision, the next Conference Board read for cross-confirmation, and whether consumption data validate or contradict the survey direction.
