Context

The NY Fed's Survey of Consumer Expectations is the softer of the household inflation-expectation gauges, sitting behind the University of Michigan series in market attention but carrying weight at the FOMC because officials cite anchored expectations as a precondition for easing. A rise at the one-year horizon of this size, with the three-year also drifting up, is the pattern that has historically made doves cautious: short-horizon expectations track realised inflation and petrol prices closely, while the five-year is the anchor that matters for policy. The distinction worth drawing is between a one-year pop driven by near-term price salience and any unanchoring further out; the five-year holding steady argues this is the former. Previous episodes where short-horizon expectations rose while the long end stayed put have tended to nudge front-end pricing rather than the curve's level. The follow-ons are the Michigan sentiment print, where the expectations component has at times diverged sharply from this survey, and whether Fed speakers reference expectations drift in subsequent remarks. The SCE also carries labour-market and credit sub-indices that have on occasion generated their own headlines when they break trend.
