US Philly Fed New Orders (Sep) 29.2 (Prev. 30.1)

A subindex of a regional manufacturing survey carries limited standalone weight; the Philly Fed's new orders component matters mainly as a lead on the national ISM and on the durable goods pipeline rather than as a trading print in its own right.

Context

A marginal downtick at an elevated level reads as stabilisation, and episodes of this kind, where orders hold firm while other components such as employment or prices paid diverge, have historically been decided by the breadth of the aggregate rather than any single line. The distinction worth drawing is between orders holding at a level consistent with expansion and orders accelerating, since rates and the dollar respond to the slope of the goods cycle, not its position. Regional surveys of this vintage also carry a well documented tendency to be revised in signal by the ISM that follows, which is the release that has historically set the tone. The follow-ons are the remaining regional Fed surveys and the national PMI prints, where confirmation or divergence across districts has been the more reliable tell than any one region alone.
