Context

Rhetoric of this kind on Houthi attacks fits a recurring pattern in which Red Sea and Gulf shipping disruption trades through freight rates, war-risk insurance premia and tanker rerouting rather than through outright crude supply loss, since the Houthi campaign has historically hit transit rather than production. The channel that matters for oil is whether escalation touches Saudi or Gulf export infrastructure itself, which has repriced Brent sharply in past episodes, versus continued harassment of shipping, which has tended to add a modest, fading risk premium as flows adapt around the Cape route. The Trump-MBS call is the more substantive element: direct US-Saudi coordination has previously preceded both military responses and quieter de-escalation, and Saudi form under MBS has tilted toward protecting its own facilities and fiscal programme rather than widening conflict. The distinction worth drawing is between signalling and action; verbal escalation from Washington has often preceded strikes on Houthi targets, which markets have largely faded, while any attack on Ras Tanura-grade infrastructure would be a different regime entirely. Tells from here are CENTCOM tasking, Saudi air-defence posture, shipping insurers' rate moves and any Iranian response, given Tehran's established role as the Houthis' sponsor. Until kinetic follow-through materialises, the established pattern is a knee-jerk bid in crude, gold and the dollar that retraces absent supply loss.
