Diesel at this kind of level has historically been a distillate-tightness story rather than a crude story: the retail print tends to lag the futures curve, and the episodes that produced comparable prints were marked by low inventories of middle distillates, constrained refining capacity, and strong freight demand, with the crack spread rather than the flat crude price doing the work. The transmission channel is well established: diesel feeds trucking, rail, agriculture and construction, so sustained elevation passes into goods inflation with a lag and shows up in freight surcharges before it shows in CPI. The distinction worth drawing is between a spike driven by refining or logistics bottlenecks, which has historically faded as capacity and imports adjust, and one driven by crude supply loss, which persists. AAA prints are a lagging, retail-level confirmation; the tells sit upstream in distillate stocks, the diesel crack, and any widening of the diesel-gasoline spread, which on previous occasions of this kind has signalled how much of the move is structural tightness versus seasonal. Follow-ons to note are inventory data, refinery utilisation, and any policy response around export restrictions or reserve releases, which past episodes of fuel-price stress have eventually prompted.
