US Retail Diesel prices hit new ATH, AAA data shows
Record retail diesel prints have historically been a symptom rather than a trigger: the price is downstream of the crude complex, refining margins and the distillate crack, and it is the crack spread, not the pump number, that tells whether the driver is feedstock cost or a constrained refining and distribution chain.

Episodes where distillate strength is margin-led have tended to be stickier than crude-led spikes, since capacity and inventory tightness resolve more slowly than a pullback in the flat price. Diesel sits at the freight, agriculture and industrial heart of the economy, so sustained highs have in past cycles fed into goods inflation with a lag and become an input to headline inflation expectations that central banks watch. The tells worth noting are the spread between retail and wholesale diesel, distillate inventory draws in the weekly data, and whether gasoline is confirming the move or diverging, which separates a broad product rally from a distillate-specific squeeze. AAA's series is a lagging, survey-based gauge; it confirms levels rather than sets them.
