Context

Flash PMIs are the earliest activity read of the month and routinely set the tone for the sessions around them, but the historical pattern is that outsized beats on this survey have often been partly faded at the final revision, since the flash is built on a partial panel and September prints in particular have tended to be revised between the two releases. A reading at this elevation versus the prior run-rate is the kind that has typically fed through to the ISM manufacturing survey that follows within days, and the market habit has been to treat the two as a pair rather than trading either in isolation. The transmission on a strong upside surprise of this size runs first through the front end and the dollar, with yields bear-steepening less reliably than the short end repricing, and cyclicals versus defensives in equities following the rates lead. The composition matters more than the headline: in past strong flashes, the split between new orders, which carries signal, and the prices components, which carry inflation risk for the rate path, has determined whether the move holds. The immediate follow-ons are the services flash from the same survey, the final revision, and the ISM, with Fed speakers the usual test of whether the data shifts the policy narrative.
