US S&P Global Services PMI Flash (Oct) 57.9 vs. Exp. 58 (Prev. 58.8)

What it means

An in-line flash PMI print is among the lower-information events on the US calendar: the index holding in the upper fifties confirms continued expansion in the dominant services sector, and a miss of a tenth of a point against consensus is well within the survey's noise. Flash PMIs sit early in the monthly data sequence and historically move Treasuries and the dollar only when they break decisively from trend or surprise on the inflation sub-indices; a print on consensus leaves the prevailing rate path priced off the labour and CPI releases intact. The distinction that matters in this series is between the headline and the components: prices paid and charged have on past occasions driven the rate reaction even when the headline was quiet, since they feed directly into the stickier services-inflation debate. The follow-ons are the manufacturing flash from the same survey, the final revision, and the ISM services survey later in the cycle, which has at times diverged from the S&P Global read and on those occasions has carried more weight with the front end. As it stands, this is confirmation rather than signal.
