US SPR falls to 286.6mln from 289.7mln, -3.1mln
A weekly draw of this size sits within the range seen when the reserve is being released or when mandated sales and exchanges are running, rather than the larger emergency drawdowns that have marked past supply interventions.

The relevant distinction for the crude complex is between scheduled or congressionally mandated releases, which are largely priced in advance and tend to pass through with little trace, and discretionary sales signalled as a policy response, which historically have capped rallies only while the release rate is sustained and have often been followed by a refill phase that reintroduces demand at the margin. At current levels the reserve is a fraction of its former capacity, which limits how much spare barrels the government can still add to supply and shifts attention to the pace and funding of any replenishment. The follow-ons are the next weekly print to establish whether this is a run rate or a one-off movement, any announced exchanges or buyback tenders, and how the physical market treats the barrels, since sweet-sour grade and Gulf Coast logistics determine whether SPR supply actually reaches refiners. The inventory read-through is against the commercial stock data the same week, where an SPR draw alongside a commercial build has tended to be neutral for flat price.
