US U-6 Unemployment Rate (Aug) 7.7% (Prev. 7.9%)
U-6 is the broadest slack gauge, capturing part-timers for economic reasons and marginally attached workers, and in most cycles it lags the headline U-3 print rather than leading it.

A two-tenth fall of this kind has historically been read as confirmatory of the direction the narrower measures already signalled, not as an independent catalyst: the front end has tended to respond to U-3 and the wage data in the same report, with U-6 moving rates only when it diverges sharply from them. The analytically useful distinction is whether the decline reflects genuine absorption or marginally attached workers exiting the measure altogether, a composition question that the labour force participation and involuntary part-time components answer better than the rate itself. Where this series has mattered more in past cycles is at turning points, when broad slack flattens or widens while U-3 is still improving, an early tell of softening that has preceded shifts in official rhetoric. As one secondary print within a larger release, its weight is incremental; the follow-ons are the participation and underemployment components and whether subsequent months extend the move.
