Context

A marginal downtick in the broadest labour slack measure. U-6, which folds in discouraged and involuntary part-time workers alongside the headline unemployed, typically moves with the U-3 rate but with a lag, and a one-tenth change in either direction has historically been within the noise band rather than a signal. The more informative episodes are those where U-6 and U-3 diverge: a widening gap has in past cycles flagged hidden slack building beneath a stable headline rate, while a narrowing gap late in expansions has pointed to genuine tightening. Here the two are moving together in a contained range, which keeps the read benign. The release sits downstream of the main payrolls print and rarely re-prices the front end on its own; its value is corroborative, confirming or complicating the labour narrative already set by the headline rate, participation and hours. What is worth watching across subsequent prints is whether the gap between the two measures holds steady or starts to drift, since sustained drift in either direction has been the more reliable tell on the cycle than any single level.
