US Weekly Private Inventory Data (bbls): Crude -4.9mln (exp. -1.1mln), Gasoline -2.0mln (exp. -0.7mln), Distillate -2.6mln (exp. -1.6mln), Cushing +0.9mln.

What it means

Weekly private inventory prints of this kind have historically moved crude most when the surprise is broad-based across products, as it is here: draws in crude, gasoline and distillates simultaneously point to genuine end-demand rather than a refinery or logistics artefact, and episodes of this pattern have tended to be read as more durable than a crude-only draw. The transmission runs through the crude curve, with front-month tightening pulling spreads toward backwardation and filtering through to refined product cracks, while product draws of this relative size imply the gasoline and distillate markets are absorbing supply faster than seasonal norms. Cushing building against a national crude draw is the one offsetting detail, and in past sequences persistent builds at the delivery hub have capped WTI relative to Brent and weighed on the WTI-Brent spread even while headline draws dominated the tape. The usual follow-on is the official government data the following session, which either confirms or walks back the private estimate, and crude has a long record of fading the initial move when the two series diverge. Worth noting is whether the draws hold once refinery runs are factored in, since draws built on lower utilisation carry a different signal than draws against high runs.
