US Wholesale Inventories (Jul MM) 1.3% vs. Exp. 1.3% (Prev. 0.2%)
Wholesale inventories is one of the second-tier US releases that rarely moves rates or FX on its own; in line with consensus, as here, it typically passes without a repricing, and the interest lies in the revision and composition rather than the headline.

The jump from the prior month's subdued print to a stronger build fits a pattern seen in past inventory cycles, where a run of weak accumulation gives way to restocking, a swing that feeds directly into the inventory contribution to GDP and has on previous occasions flattered or flattered-away quarterly growth estimates by a meaningful margin. The distinction worth drawing is between intended restocking, which tends to accompany firm wholesale sales and a stable or falling inventory-to-sales ratio, and unintended accumulation, where stockpiles rise faster than sales and historically precede a production slowdown as wholesalers work the overhang off. The follow-ons that matter are the accompanying wholesale sales print and the ratio itself, plus whether the advance figure survives revision, since this series has a track record of being nudged around between the preliminary and final reads. As a standalone in-line number, the signal is in the trend break against the prior month rather than the surprise.
