Context

Used vehicle prices flipping from positive to negative year-on-year extends a deflationary pattern that has been one of the more persistent contributors to core goods disinflation in recent years. The transmission channel here is indirect: wholesale auction and retail used car readings feed into the used cars and trucks component of the official CPI with a lag, so a softening print of this kind tends to be read as a forward signal on the goods side of the inflation basket rather than as a market mover in its own right. Episodes where used car inflation turns negative have historically been associated with normalising dealer inventories and a fading of the supply-side distortions that drove the earlier spike, conditions under which goods deflation has tended to offset sticky services prints. The distinction worth drawing is between a one-month dip and a sustained negative run: the former is noise, the latter has in past cycles foreshadowed a broader easing in core goods. The relevant follow-ons are the next official CPI release and whether wholesale indicators corroborate the direction, since wholesale readings have typically led retail by a few months. As a single second-tier print, it moves rates pricing only at the margin.
