Context
Monthly Chinese reserve prints are read less as a standalone figure than as a decomposition exercise: the headline change conflates valuation effects from the dollar and global bond prices with actual flow, and episodes of this kind have repeatedly shown a large share of any monthly move to be passive rather than evidence of intervention. A decline of this scale is consistent with the usual pattern in which broad dollar strength and lower bond prices mechanically shrink the reported total, so the tell is whether the direction matches what valuation alone would imply rather than the raw drawdown itself. Where the stock falls faster than valuation effects can explain, past episodes have pointed to onshore dollar selling to smooth the renminbi, a pattern historically visible in the gap between the fixing and where spot trades. The round-number level itself carries signalling weight: in prior cycles the authorities have been observed defending perceived psychological thresholds on the reserve stock, so proximity to them has mattered for how the data is framed domestically. The follow-ons are the fixing behaviour around the release, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange commentary that typically accompanies the data, and any shift in the pace of gold accumulation, which has on previous occasions revealed more about official intent than the headline stock.
