New Zealand Labour Costs Index (Q3 YY) 2.0% vs. Exp. 2.1% (Prev. 2.1%)

What it means

A marginal undershoot on the Labour Cost Index sits within the sequence the RBNZ has been running for some time: wage growth decelerating in line with a soft labour market and slack capacity, conditions the Bank has repeatedly cited as consistent with inflation settling inside the target band. The LCI is a negotiated-rates measure rather than an average-earnings one, so it tends to move slowly and confirm trends rather than surprise them; small misses of this size have historically mattered less for their print than for whether they break the direction of travel, which here they do not. The transmission channel runs through services and non-tradables inflation, the component the RBNZ treats as the binding constraint on how far the OCR can fall, so sustained softness in private-sector wage settlements has tended to validate an easing bias at the margin. What has mattered in past cycles is the split between private and public sector settlements, with public wage agreements historically the stickier leg. Follow-ons worth noting are the next labour market release for confirmation of slack and the Bank's own wording around non-tradables disinflation at the next decision.
