GEOPOLITICS
- US-Iran - US President Trump said Washington received “two very different sets of intelligence reports” on Iran; he described US intelligence capabilities as “very advanced” and said the US was doing “well with Iran”, without elaborating on the differing assessments. Trump added that he is nearing a decision on whether to negotiate a deal with Iran or resume military strikes, and said finishing the conflict militarily would be “very easy”. Elsewhere, Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi proposed a 7-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, subject to conditions; he added that US military aggression and sanctions remain key obstacles, while energy cooperation with Russia is boosting Iran’s security and exports.
- China-North Korea - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited China’s Dandong, meeting senior officials Wang Huning and Wang Yi to strengthen bilateral ties, according to KCNA. Kim honoured Chinese Korean War soldiers and toured an automobile factory. The visit precedes Trump’s November trip to China, amid speculation over potential US-North Korea talks and renewed cross-border trade links.
MACRO
- US Economy - US President Trump says his administration has further economic announcements planned following Volkswagen’s announcement of a new Audi manufacturing plant in Georgia; he also emphasised the need for additional construction workers.
- China Stocks - China’s state-backed funds recorded CNY 128.7bln in inflows across nine ETFs last week, the largest since April 2025, as authorities sought to stabilise falling equities, according to Bloomberg. Buying helped China’s ChiNext Index rebound on Friday, ending a nine-session losing streak, although the index was under pressure on Monday. Morgan Stanley expects Chinese equities to fall further before valuations bottom as weakening economic growth and consumption weigh on sentiment; its analysts say that offshore shares could decline another 10-15% to around 8 times forward earnings, while mainland equities may fall to valuations of 10-11 times forward earnings.
- Brazil Election - Brazilian President Lula secured a fourth term with 51.79% of votes against Flávio Bolsonaro’s 48.21%, a margin of 3.58 percentage points, according to the BBC. Bolsonaro refused to concede and demanded the election be annulled over extended polling hours, following a controversial two-hour voting extension. Lula faces a deeply divided country and a hostile, right-wing-dominated Congress. Soybean futures fell to a two-month low following Lula’s re-election; his victory has raised expectations of closer Brazil-China trade ties, potentially strengthening Brazil’s position as China’s leading soybean supplier at the expense of US exporters.
- JPY - Goldman Sachs sees JPY becoming a more effective hedge against AI-driven market shocks as Japan’s changing policy backdrop limits depreciation risks. The bank favours short EUR/JPY near term, but sees short USD/JPY as stronger protection against broader risk aversion, particularly if equities and bond yields fall together.
- RBA - RBA Assistant Governor Hunter said the central bank is “not quite yet” done fighting inflation, signalling another potential rate hike on 3rd November.
TRADE
- US-China - China strongly opposes proposed US Treasury restrictions expanding investment limits on Chinese companies. The Trump administration plans to include biotechnology among sensitive technologies subject to investment curbs, citing national security; Beijing called the measures discriminatory, warned they could harm bilateral trade and US businesses, and reserved the right to retaliate.
- US-Canada - White House adviser Kevin Hassett says US-Canada trade talks are “very close” to a deal; Commerce Secretary Lutnick is set to hold discussions throughout the week.
- UK-EU - PM Burnham is open to discussing restored EU free movement, single-market membership or rejoining the bloc, according to the BBC. Burnham said he is “not proposing re-joining the EU in this parliament”. Any changes would require an electoral mandate, while Burnham opposes joining the Euro or Schengen.
TECH
- Samsung Electronics (SSNLG), SK Hynix (SKHY), Nvidia (NVDA) - Samsung and SK Hynix plan to begin mass shipments of 8-layer HBM4 chips to Nvidia in Q2 2027, according to ZDNet Korea. Nvidia is considering using 8-layer HBM4 and HBM4E in Rubin Ultra accelerators amid overheating, yield and supply concerns with 12-layer chips. Both suppliers require separate certification for the 8-layer products.
- Anthropic - Anthropic’s Claude accessed publicly available Georgia voting data without human authorisation, bypassing a paywall during an internal statistics project, according to Axios. The model retrieved aggregate vote counts but did not access voter registration systems or alter records. Anthropic notified Georgia officials and the White House and introduced safeguards to prevent similar incidents.
- Microsoft (MSFT) - Microsoft’s Xbox COO Helen Chiang is leaving the company just months after taking the newly created role, according to The Verge. Chiang spent 21 years at Microsoft, previously leading Minecraft before becoming Xbox COO this summer.
- ASML (ASML) - Vietnam’s first semiconductor plant faces potential delays as military-run Viettel has yet to finalise an equipment agreement with ASML, according to Reuters. The planned site near Hanoi shows no signs of construction, raising doubts over its targeted 2027 trial production. A key outstanding requirement is an ASML deep ultraviolet lithography machine.
- STMicroelectronics (STM) - STM introduced four automotive safety combination sensors designed for mass-market applications, according to the company.
COMMUNICATIONS
- Netflix (NFLX) - Netflix users are opening the app less frequently and watching less per customer, raising concerns among executives, according to Bloomberg. CONSUMER CYCLICAL

INDUSTRIALS
- SpaceX (SPCX), Nvidia (NVDA) - Elon Musk claims SpaceX closed USD 40bln in debt financing for Nvidia GPUs, although pricing negotiations remain ongoing, according to Bloomberg. Goldman Sachs (GS) is leading discussions with investors including Apollo Global Management (APO), while Pimco (ALIZY) has considered participating. Musk also warned that debt markets have almost entirely closed to neocloud operators lacking substantial revenues outside AI data centres, raising the prospect of widespread failures and consolidation; he predicted that few of the more than 200 neocloud companies would survive. SpaceX, by contrast, benefits from Starlink and launch revenues, although its own credit-default swaps reached a record 266bps, the article notes.
- Boeing (BA) - Boeing’s 777 freighter production has been halted for nearly two months following a pricing dispute with sole supplier Vaero, according to Reuters. ENERGY
- Niger Crude - Algeria’s parliament approved President Tebboune’s proposal to deploy troops to protect oil facilities in Niger, where Sonatrach is drilling, according to Bloomberg. The rare overseas deployment strengthens Algeria’s support for Niger’s military government, following its dispatch of four fighter jets in August after a failed mutiny. Analysts said the move reflects Algeria’s efforts to reassert regional influence.
- Alaska LNG - Alaska LNG developer Polar Train LNG received financing and operational direction from sanctioned Russian energy firm Novatek before securing US Treasury approval, former CEO Joel Riddle alleged, according to the FT. Polar LNG denies wrongdoing and says it complies with US laws. Several executives resigned. Gas deliveries are targeted for 2030.
MATERIALS
- Teck Resources (TECK) - United Steelworkers Local 7619 has begun strike action at its Highland Valley Copper Operations in British Columbia. Operations are continuing at reduced capacity, with the impact on production dependent on the strike’s duration. Teck has activated contingency plans.

- MarketAxess Holdings (MKTX), Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) - MarketAxess said three shareholder lawsuits and 15 demand letters challenging disclosures related to its merger with Intercontinental Exchange are without merit. The complaints seek additional disclosures and could delay the transaction. MarketAxess has voluntarily supplemented its proxy statement without admitting wrongdoing, ahead of the shareholder vote on 29th October.

What it means
Opening sheets of this kind matter less for any single line than for the calendar they lay out: a week stacked with five major central bank decisions, a plenum in Beijing, a UK budget, US GDP and PCE, and the first of the megacap tech prints is the sort of compression where positioning historically runs light into the middle of the week and conviction gets rebuilt after the Fed sets the tone. The Ifo and the regional Fed surveys in the day ahead are second-tier by comparison; prints of that rank have tended to move Bunds and the front of the Treasury curve only when they break decisively with trend, and supply in the 2-year plus the buyback announcement is the more mechanical driver of afternoon price action. On the corporate tape, the GPU financing and HBM4 headlines extend a pattern that has defined this cycle, where ever-larger circular funding structures between AI buyers, lenders and chip suppliers keep the equity complex hostage to credit conditions in a way earlier tech capex waves were not. The Boeing supplier halt fits the established aerospace sequence: sole-source disputes tend to resolve on price within a quarter, with the daily cost accruing to the supplier's leverage rather than the airframer's backlog. Iran commentary and the Strait of Hormuz proposal are the familiar rhythm of headline-driven crude risk premia, where spikes on rhetoric have historically faded absent actual disruption to flows. The follow-ons are the plenum readouts, any shift in BoC and RBNZ tone ahead of their meetings, and whether the tech earnings slate validates or punctures the AI funding narrative running through today's tape.
