European Construction Output (Aug YY) 1.4% (Prev. -1.7%)

What it means

Construction output is among the lowest-tier euro area releases, historically moving little beyond the niche read on the building sector; the FX and rates complex has tended to look through it to the survey data, national GDP prints and the labour numbers that carry more weight in the policy debate. The swing from contraction to growth in the annual rate is directionally notable but is the kind of reversal that has often reflected base effects, weather distortions and calendar quirks rather than a clean turn in activity, and single-month reversals in this series have frequently been revised or faded in subsequent prints. The series is also volatile at the member-state level, with the larger economies' housing and infrastructure pipelines doing most of the work, so the national breakdowns matter more than the aggregate. The follow-ons of interest are whether the forward-looking construction PMIs corroborate the improvement and whether order book and permit data point in the same direction. As a standalone print it rarely alters the ECB-relevant narrative; it enters the picture only as corroboration of a broader trend already visible elsewhere.
