European Selling Price Expectations (Oct) 24.8 (Prev. 20.8)
What it means
Selling price expectations sit within the European Commission's monthly business surveys, a series the ECB watches as a soft proxy for pipeline pricing power rather than a hard inflation gauge. A step up of this size, several points in a single month, has in past episodes tended to matter most when it aligns with the official inflation prints and wage data; survey-only firming has more often faded without a policy response. The transmission channel is pricing intentions feeding the inflation outlook and, in turn, the hawkish-dovish balance inside the Governing Council, so the read-through runs to the front end and to EUR via rate expectations rather than through any mechanical rule. The distinction worth drawing is between a broad-based rise across industry and services and one concentrated in a single sector, since only the former has historically shifted the policy narrative. Follow-ons are the consumer price expectations component of the same survey round, the next flash HICP, and whether ECB officials reference survey-based indicators in upcoming commentary. As a single soft survey point it is a signal to corroborate, not a trigger.
