A French multi-line OAT auction that clears at the top of the announced range tells its own story about supply pressure: syndicate-free sovereign issuance of this size, spanning the ten to the long end, is how AFT has tended to operate when the funding task is heavy, and topping out the range rather than coming in below it points to limited room for concession. The more informative cross-checks are the average yields, which sit well above the prior outings on every line, and the uneven demand picture: cover rose on the 2037 and 2048 lines while thinning markedly on the 2036 and especially the 2038, where previous appetite was strongest. In past episodes of this kind, long-end French paper with lower coupons has been the first to show demand fatigue when the OAT-Bund spread is under scrutiny, and the 2048 line here drawing solid cover despite the longest duration exposure is the more notable result. The distinction worth drawing is between a concession-led clearing at higher yields, which is orderly supply absorption, and a genuine demand shortfall, which these cover ratios do not show. Worth watching next is the secondary reaction in the spread to Bunds and whether the next scheduled French outing repeats the pattern of higher clearing yields with steady, if thinner, demand.
