German Brandenburg CPI (Oct YY) 2.9% (Prev. 3.6%)
What it means
German state inflation prints serve as the established lead indicator for the national flash estimate, with the large states, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Brandenburg among them, releasing through the morning ahead of the federal figure. A downside move of this size in a state print has historically been read through to the national YY rate, though Brandenburg is among the smaller states and its composition can diverge from the national basket, so confirmation from the larger states matters more for the aggregate. The transmission channel is the front end of the euro curve via ECB rate expectations, since the ECB's reaction function is set off the euro-area aggregate, and Germany carries the largest weight in that figure. A cooling German print of this kind has in past disinflation phases reinforced the dovish read on the near-term path without necessarily shifting the terminal rate debate. Worth noting is whether the deceleration is broad-based or driven by energy base effects and administered components, since the ECB has historically discounted moves concentrated in volatile categories. The follow-ons are the remaining state prints, the national flash later the same day, and the euro-area aggregate that follows it.
