Indian WPI Manufacturing (Aug YY) 8.37% (Prev. 8.29%)

A marginal uptick in wholesale manufacturing prices of this size sits within the noise band and, in isolation, has not historically been the series that moves Indian rates pricing.

Context

WPI in India carries less policy weight than CPI, which is the RBI's formal target variable; the wholesale series matters mainly as a pipeline read on core goods inflation and on corporate input costs, and the manufactured products component is the less volatile leg compared with food and fuel, which typically drive the headline. The distinction worth drawing is between manufactured inflation firming because of demand pull, which would feed into the core CPI debate, and firming driven by commodity pass-through, which the RBI has historically looked through. Given the small beat versus the prior print, the tell is whether the core CPI releases that follow confirm a drift higher in underlying goods prices, since a sustained divergence between elevated wholesale manufacturing prices and softer consumer core readings has tended to resolve in favour of the consumer series for policy purposes. The next follow-ons are the CPI print and the RBI commentary around it; a WPI move of this magnitude on its own has not shifted rate expectations in past episodes.
