International affairs and foreign policy expert tells Al Mayadeen Iran will not accept the removal of uranium enriched to 40% from its territory

  • Says the enriched materials it currently possesses are perhaps what is preventing a renewed aggression against it.

What it means

Iranian red lines on enrichment have usually been drawn less around the assay number than around custody, verification and the option to reverse course, so a refusal to remove 40% material from Iranian territory reads as a maximalist opening position rather than a technical footnote. In past negotiating rounds the sequence has been public insistence on sovereignty, indirect contacts, then argument over whether material is shipped out, blended down, capped or placed under monitoring, with each route carrying a different breakout and sanctions relief value. The sourcing is thin, an expert speaking to Al Mayadeen rather than an official communiqué, so the tell is whether Iranian negotiators, the IAEA track or mediators echo the same custody condition. For crude the established channel is not the stockpile itself but the probability of renewed strikes or interference around Gulf export infrastructure, which shows up first in prompt time spreads, call skew, freight and insurance before any change in physical balances. Where talks have survived, the compromise has tended to preserve face on sovereignty while reducing near term breakout risk; where they have failed, escalation risk has been priced and then faded unless tankers, pipelines or Hormuz transit were actually touched.
