US EQUITY OPEN: Indices gain on geopolitical optimism as tech-behemoth AAPL earnings await after-hours

Newsquawk Staff ·

OPEN: US indices opened higher amid risk-on trade, after reports that Iranian President Pezeshkian said the Supreme Leader has granted the government some authority on dialogue. US equity futures gained on the reports and the gains extended into the cash open. Treasuries and spot gold rose, while the Dollar and the crude complex came under pressure. WTI and Brent are lower by c. USD 7/bbl, leaving Energy as the clear sectoral laggard. Sectors are otherwise broadly in the green, led by Consumer Discretionary, followed by Materials and Communication Services. Earnings have been quiet so far, as is typical at the start of the week, with Apple (AAPL) the highlight after-hours. In FX, CHF, EUR and GBP are all firmer against the Greenback to varying degrees, with EUR among the outperformers despite Fitch’s negative outlook on France. AUD underperforms ahead of the RBA overnight. Precious metals are firmer, and Treasuries are bid across the curve, helped by the drop in oil and the softer Dollar. Looking ahead, ISM Manufacturing PMI is due at the top of the hour, and Fed speak is expected from Goolsbee and possibly from the hawkish dissenters, Cook and Hammack.

What it means

Headlines of this kind, where an Iranian president signals conditional dialogue authority granted from the Supreme Leader, have a well-worn pattern: an initial risk premium unwind concentrated in crude, with the move tending to fade unless confirmed by follow-through from the counterparties or by concrete steps on the negotiating track. The transmission here is the standard one, a sharp drop in the oil complex dragging Energy as the clear laggard while easing the inflation impulse at the margin, which is consistent with Treasuries bid across the curve and a softer Dollar; the distinction worth drawing is between a durable de-escalation, which reprices the geopolitical premium embedded in crude, and a tactical statement, which historically retraces within sessions. The rest of the session is hostage to the scheduled calendar rather than the headline: ISM Manufacturing at the top of the hour, and any remarks from the recent hawkish dissenters, whose comments have tended to matter more for the front end when they elaborate on the reasoning behind the dissent rather than simply restating it. Apple reporting after the close is the classic conviction-capper; in past episodes of this size, index breadth into the close has mattered less than the single print, with options-implied moves setting the tone for the following session's Nasdaq leadership. On the single-stock side, Oracle's combined equity and debt raise follows the hyperscaler funding pattern that has previously pressured the issuer on dilution while being read as confirmation of the AI capex cycle for the peer set, and Okta's index inclusion replacing Kenvue is a mechanical flow event concentrated in the closing auction of the effective date. AUD underperformance into the RBA fits the familiar pre-decision pattern of light positioning rather than information.
