Irish Wholesale Prices (Sep YY) 7.4% (Prev. 6.5%)

What it means

Irish wholesale price readings sit low in the hierarchy of euro-area releases; a pick-up in the annual rate of this size is a pipeline indicator at best, and single-country producer or wholesale prints from smaller member states have historically moved nothing beyond domestic rates commentary. The transmission channel that matters is indirect: whether upstream price pressures of this kind feed into the national HICP print and, through it, the euro-area aggregate that the ECB actually reacts to. Episodes where wholesale or producer prices accelerate while consumer inflation is softening have tended to resolve as a margin story rather than a policy story, and the reverse pass-through, when it occurs, has historically taken quarters rather than weeks. The distinction worth drawing is between goods-driven wholesale moves, which track commodity and freight cycles and fade, and services-linked cost growth, which has proved stickier in past cycles. The follow-ons are the next Irish CPI release and any commentary from the Irish central bank, whose governor sits on the ECB Governing Council and has form for framing domestic price data in a euro-wide context. As a standalone print, this is calendar filler for anything but Irish domestic exposure.
