US TRADE

  • US stocks were on the backfoot on Friday as the major gainers the previous day pared initial strength, while Marvell earnings also weighed on indices, after earnings were considered disappointing given lower-than-expected gross margin guidance and the deferral of longer-term fiscal guidance. Attention was on Fed Chair Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole, which proved to be hawkish and pressured cyclical-exposed names. Warsh outlined that inflation remains a greater concern than employment, even in light of better-than-expected inflation figures through summer, while he noted the Fed has more work to do unless progress towards its 2% inflation target resumes, as well as stated the Fed’s predominant focus now should be on prices and that the July FOMC expressed readiness to act as circumstances might require. In response, the dollar saw broad-based strength, the Treasury curve flattened, and spot gold was weighed by the renewed Fed rate hike bets, with Barclays and SocGen anticipating hikes in September and December. At the same time as Warsh's speech, the prelim NFP annual revision was -79k, and UoM final revisions were slightly better than expected, with the 1yr inflation expectation ticking down; price action was determined by Warsh.

Context

The lead is a US strike on IRGC positions at Larak Island tied directly to the Strait of Hormuz, and episodes of this kind have historically run through a familiar sequence: an initial crude risk premium in the front of the curve, with the durable move only if physical flows through the strait are actually disrupted or insurance and freight costs on Gulf transit rise materially. The IRGC retaliation warning is the standard pattern; past comparable exchanges have tended toward contained, telegraphed responses rather than closure of the strait, though the threatened versus realised distinction is what separates a fade from a sustained repricing. Against this sits a hawkish Fed chair speech that flattened the Treasury curve and lifted the dollar, and the interaction matters: hawkish rate paths have historically blunted the safe-haven bid in gold while amplifying it in the dollar, which matches the reported gold softness despite the conflict escalation. The Venezuela supply angle, with talk of raised output and reserve refilling, works in the opposite direction on crude and partly offsets the Hormuz premium, a split worth keeping distinct since one leg is a flow story and the other is a risk story. Near-term tells are any Iranian follow-through versus rhetoric, tanker insurance rates and Hormuz transit reporting, and whether the Asian data calendar, including Chinese PMIs, competes with the geopolitical tape for direction. As an opening-note format, this is a scene-setter rather than a single-event signal.
