ASIA

APAC stocks were ultimately mixed as the region clawed back some of the recent tech-related losses, while participants also digested key releases from China, including inflation and trade figures. ASX 200 declined with the index dragged lower by underperformance in the top-weighted financials sector, while sentiment amongst miners was not helped by the indecision in Rio Tinto following its quarterly production update. Nikkei 225 reclaimed the 68,000 level as tech stocks got some reprieve from recent selling. KOSPI was among the biggest gainers as tech rebounded from the recent underperformance. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp were flat as participants digested a slew of data, including stronger-than-expected trade figures and mixed inflation numbers in which CPI printed softer-than-expected, while PPI was hot and showed a faster-than-anticipated acceleration in factory gate prices.

Chinese Inflation - CPI (Sep YY) 0.9% vs. Exp. 1% (Prev. 0.8%); CPI (Sep MM) 0.2% vs. Exp. 0.3% (Prev. 0.4%); PPI (Sep YY) 5.0% vs. Exp. 4.5% (Prev. 3.8%)

China Trade Data - Trade Balance (Sep) 133.53B vs. Exp. 118.1B (Prev. 119.09B); Exports (Sep YY) 36.3% vs. Exp. 25.5% (Prev. 25%); Imports (Sep YY) 31% vs. Exp. 24.5% (Prev. 28.2%)

Context

This is a session-opening digest rather than a single catalyst, and items of this kind matter mainly through which of the contained threads carries into the European cash open. The macro anchor is the Chinese data mix: a soft CPI alongside a hot, accelerating PPI and a trade beat is a combination that has historically been read as factory-gate reflation without consumer demand, a split that has tended to support metals and the miners while leaving the consumption-facing complex unmoved. The single-stock story with the widest read-across is ASML: a clean beat on earnings, margins and bookings with guidance raised and the CEO flagging supply shortfalls against AI-driven demand, yet shares indicated lower. A strong print sold on the open is a pattern associated with crowded positioning and elevated expectations, and the tell is whether the semicap peer set and the wider AI supply chain follow the stock or decouple from it. Elsewhere the tape is idiosyncratic: a capital add-on at SEB for model deficiencies, a Swiss parliamentary step toward a too-big-to-fail liquidity fee for the major banks, an activist push for a strategic review at Big Yellow, and a reported UK VAT crackdown on online marketplaces that, if formalised, shifts compliance costs onto the platforms rather than the sellers. Worth watching is whether the APAC tech rebound holds through the European morning and whether Rio's in-line production update resolves the indecision that weighed on the miners overnight. As a wrap, the note is orientation rather than signal.
